Network monitoring with Checkmk

Checkmk automatically discovers network devices and the services running on them: switches, routers, firewalls, access points and WAN links. Auto-discovery is what sets it apart from hand-built monitoring — when a new device joins the network, it shows up on its own, with its checks already configured.

It supports SNMP v1, v2c and v3 and ships with more than 2,000 ready-made integrations for network vendors, operating systems, databases, hypervisors and public cloud. For the operations team, that means fewer hours writing templates and more time fixing what matters.

Server, virtualization and cloud monitoring

A single agent covers Linux, Windows, AIX and Solaris and reports CPU, memory, disk, processes, services and logs with no extra configuration. On top of that come VMware, Hyper-V, Proxmox, Kubernetes, Docker, AWS, Azure and Google Cloud.

The operational payoff is having the data center and the cloud on the same dashboard, with the same alerting logic. No more one tool for legacy systems and another for everything new.

Checkmk editions

Community — free and open source, with no licence cap. The vendor positions it for environments of around 100 hosts.

Pro — high availability, availability and SLA reporting, synthetic monitoring and vendor support.

Ultimate — everything above plus multi-site management, application observability and the highest scale limits.

Cloud — the platform managed by Checkmk, with no self-hosted installation.

If a paid-edition trial expires, the installation falls back to a free mode limited to 750 services and a single site. That is usually when a team has to decide which licence fits — and it’s the conversation we have every day.

Checkmk vs. Zabbix, Nagios and PRTG

Zabbix. It’s a great tool and it’s free, so the comparison isn’t about price. The difference is the cost of running it: Zabbix is configured through templates someone on the team has to write and maintain. Checkmk discovers services on its own. Teams that switch rarely do it for the tool — they do it for the hours it takes to keep it running.

Nagios. Checkmk started as a Nagios extension, so the check logic is familiar and migration is short. What changes is auto-discovery, the interface and performance at thousands of services.

PRTG (Paessler). Sensor-based licensing makes costs grow in ways that are hard to predict as the environment expands. Checkmk is licensed per monitored service, with predictable pricing.

Checkmk Community is free, open source and has no licence cap; the vendor positions it for environments of around 100 hosts. Larger environments, or those needing high availability, SLA reporting, vendor support or multi-site management, call for a paid edition. If a paid-edition trial expires, the installation falls back to a free mode limited to 750 services and a single site.

Yes. Checkmk monitors switches, routers, firewalls, access points and WAN links over SNMP v1, v2c and v3, with automatic discovery of interfaces and services, and more than 2,000 ready-made integrations.

A native agent for Linux, Windows, AIX and Solaris, plus native integrations with VMware, Hyper-V, Proxmox, Kubernetes, Docker, AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, as well as databases and applications.

Both are mature monitoring platforms. The main difference is operational: Zabbix is configured through templates the team writes and maintains, while Checkmk discovers services automatically. In growing environments that means fewer maintenance hours.

Yes. Checkmk started as a Nagios extension, so check logic is compatible and migration is direct. Moving from PRTG is also common, mainly because of the licensing model. Aufiero supports the migration in both cases.
